What is conveyancing?

Conveyancing is the specialist arm of property law.

Licensed Conveyancers are regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers. The Council is a statutory body, which derives its powers from The Administration of Justice Act 1985.

A Licensed Conveyancer is has to pass the Council examinations and also be able to demonstrate considerable practical experience before they can retain a licence. The conveyancer is also expected to maintain regular training and development courses throughout the year.

There are two types of conveyancing licenses.

Limited licence holders are authorised to provide property conveyancing services only as employees.

Full licences are only granted to those who can demonstrate further practical experience, and show that they are fully competent to run a conveyancing business. The conveyancer must also be able to prove that they are able to be trusted with handling large sums of clients' money on a day-to-day basis.

As of mid 2006, there were approximately 300 full licence holders. By contrast there are approximately 80,500 general solicitors in private practise in England and Wales.

Only a relatively small minority of those involved in property conveyancing currently offer online conveyancing services and we are one of those.
